Global superstar Ed Sheeran is setting the stage for his musical return in 2025, dropping hints about his next album through playful social media interactions. The artist behind hits like “Shape of You” appears to have revealed his upcoming album’s title while responding to fans online.
Moving beyond his Mathematics series of albums (+, x, ÷, =, and –), Sheeran engaged with followers who were speculating about his next mathematical venture. In a lighthearted response to a fan commenting on his profile picture change, Sheeran admitted his own struggles with mathematics, noting he never completed high school. The real revelation came in his closing statement: “Play coming soon though.”
The title “Play” aligns with Sheeran’s previous hints about his musical direction. Late last year, he told fans to expect him when they “press Play again on pop,” suggesting a return to his pop roots. While fans theorized about a potential series including “Play, Pause, Stop, Rewind, Skip,” Sheeran joked that he “might skip Skip.”
This forthcoming album, set to be his eighth studio release, follows 2023’s “Autumn Variations” and marks a departure from his mathematical album series. In conversations with Variety, Sheeran expressed excitement about returning to “big pop,” suggesting a shift in sound from his recent works.
