Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, country music’s songs about the tragedy are being revisited as the United States marks the anniversary. Among the best-known is Darryl Worley’s “Have You Forgotten?,” which became one of the defining country songs associated with the post-9/11 period.
Released in March 2003, “Have You Forgotten?” was written by Worley and Wynn Varble and became a major commercial success. The song spent seven weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and reached No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Worley’s biggest mainstream hit.
Worley has returned to the song for the 25th anniversary, releasing a newly recorded version on Sept. 11, 2026. The updated recording changes the final reference to Osama bin Laden to acknowledge that the al-Qaeda leader was killed in 2011. Worley has also described the song as a tribute to military personnel and first responders.
“Have You Forgotten?” was part of a wider wave of country music responding to the attacks. Alan Jackson released “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning),” while Toby Keith recorded “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).” Other patriotic songs also returned to prominence as country artists addressed grief, military service, national identity and the aftermath of the attacks.
Jackson’s “Where Were You” took a different approach from the more confrontational tone of some post-9/11 country releases. The song focused on the confusion and emotions surrounding the attacks and became one of the most prominent musical responses to the tragedy. Meanwhile, songs such as Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” reflected the anger and military response that followed.
Worley’s song also became part of the political and cultural discussion surrounding the Iraq War. While Worley said the song was about remembering Sept. 11 and honoring those affected, its references to terrorism, military action and Saddam Hussein-era tensions led to debate over its political meaning.
The 25th anniversary has brought renewed attention to how music helped Americans process the attacks in the years that followed. A Sept. 10, 2026, reflection noted that a growing number of Americans were either too young to remember 9/11 or were born after the attacks, making songs from that period part of the cultural record for younger generations.
As the anniversary arrives, “Have You Forgotten?” remains one of the most recognizable country recordings directly connected to 9/11. Worley’s newly released version places the song back into the spotlight while marking a quarter-century since the attacks that inspired a generation of music.
