Harry Styles Pays Tribute to Liam Payne With Unreleased Song on Anniversary of His Death

Harry Styles paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne during his concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 16, 2026, marking the second anniversary of Payne’s death. Styles performed a previously unreleased song titled “What Is Enough,” which he said he wrote for his friend approximately two years earlier.

The performance took place during Styles’ ongoing “Together, Together” residency at Madison Square Garden. Before introducing the song, the singer paused to reflect on the people who had supported him throughout his career and the personal loss he experienced in 2024. He told the audience that he felt fortunate to perform in New York but acknowledged that the anniversary carried a different meaning for him.

“There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with, that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without,” Styles said. “And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.” He encouraged concertgoers to look after one another before introducing the song he had written in Payne’s memory.

Styles performed “What Is Enough” as an acoustic ballad, with the restrained arrangement placing the focus on his vocals and the song’s lyrics. Lines heard in audience-recorded footage reflected on grief, friendship and the experience of losing someone close. The performance marked the first time Styles had publicly presented the unreleased track, which he had kept private since writing it after Payne’s death.

The song’s title and lyrics prompted an immediate response from fans, many of whom shared footage of the performance on social media. The tribute also renewed attention to the relationship between the two singers, who rose to international fame together as members of One Direction. Styles, Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik formed the group after appearing on the British television competition The X Factor in 2010.

One Direction became one of the most commercially successful pop groups of the 2010s, releasing albums including Up All Night, Take Me Home, Midnight Memories, Four and Made in the A.M. The group went on hiatus in 2016, with its members subsequently pursuing individual music careers. Although the band members developed separate professional paths, their shared history remained a central part of their public identities.

Payne died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His death prompted tributes from fans, fellow musicians and the other former One Direction members. In a joint statement released at the time, Styles, Horan, Tomlinson and Malik expressed their devastation and described Payne as a friend whose memory they would cherish.

Styles also issued a personal statement following Payne’s death, describing his former bandmate as warm, supportive and loving. He wrote about the years they spent together in One Direction and said those experiences would remain among the most cherished years of his life. In later comments, Styles discussed the difficulty of grieving someone whose life had been closely connected to his own and of processing that loss while it was being discussed publicly.

Payne’s death also led to renewed scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding his final days in Argentina. Investigations and legal proceedings followed, with Argentine authorities examining the events at the hotel and the roles of people connected to the case. The singer’s family, friends and fans continued to commemorate his life and musical legacy in the years following his death.

The October 16 tribute came during the final stretch of Styles’ Madison Square Garden residency, which forms part of his “Together, Together” tour. The run includes multiple performances at the New York venue, where Styles has developed a strong connection with audiences through his solo career. The residency has also provided opportunities for him to revisit personal experiences and milestones in a setting that has become important to his live performances.

Following “What Is Enough,” Styles returned to the concert’s scheduled set, including performances of “Sign of the Times” and “Aperture.” The unreleased song was not announced as a commercial release, and no release date was provided during the performance. Its debut nevertheless gave fans their first public opportunity to hear a musical tribute Styles had written for Payne.

The performance added a new chapter to the public remembrance of Payne two years after his death. By introducing a song written in the immediate aftermath of the loss, Styles connected the anniversary to their shared history and acknowledged the lasting impact of their friendship in front of a New York audience.
