The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered their biggest television audience in 11 years, drawing 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, according to fast national live-plus-same-day Nielsen figures. The Sept. 27 ceremony marked the most-watched VMAs since the 2015 show, which attracted 12.73 million viewers when it aired exclusively on MTV.

This year’s audience represented a 51% increase from the 2025 VMAs, which drew 5.6 million viewers across CBS and MTV, including MTV’s encore broadcast. The 2025 ceremony had already marked a six-year viewership high after CBS began simulcasting the awards show.
The 2026 ceremony was broadcast live from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater and was simulcast on CBS and MTV. The move continued the VMAs’ expansion onto CBS following last year’s first CBS simulcast, giving the awards show access to a broader network television audience.
The broadcast also recorded a significant audience peak during the opening portion of the ceremony. More than 15 million viewers were reported during the opening performance, which featured Madonna alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx.
Madonna opened the show with material from her Confessions II era before performing “Danceteria Afterhours” with Charli xcx and joining Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.” The ceremony also featured performances from artists including Taylor Swift, LISA, Shaboozey, RAYE and others.
Taylor Swift was another major part of the night’s programming. She received the inaugural Artist Director Honors, won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and premiered the “Patient Zero” music video during the ceremony.
The 2026 VMAs also included Nirvana receiving the Video Vanguard Award, while the ceremony featured a tribute to George Michael with performances from RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims, followed by a surprise appearance from Adam Lambert.
The latest figures make the 2026 ceremony the most-watched VMAs since 2015, with the final audience measurement potentially subject to revision as additional Nielsen viewing data becomes available.
