Mariah Carey Shares ‘Hint’ on When Her Shelved Grunge Album Is Coming: ‘I Get Asked This About Once a Week’

Mariah Carey has given fans another update on her long-awaited grunge album, Someone’s Ugly Daughter, suggesting that the unreleased project could eventually make its way out of the archives. During a Reddit Ask Me Anything session on Friday, October 30, the singer responded to a fan asking when she would release the alternative-rock recordings.

“I get asked this about once a week,” Carey wrote. “My answer is… #notyet (this is a hint!).” Her response renewed interest in the project, which she secretly recorded in 1995 while working on her fifth studio album, Daydream.

The Reddit conversation was held to mark the 25th anniversary of Glitter, Carey’s 2001 soundtrack album. During the session, she answered questions about her music, personal interests and potential collaborations, while also discussing the possibility of releasing previously unheard material.

Someone’s Ugly Daughter was recorded during the sessions for Daydream, which became one of the most successful albums of Carey’s career. The singer explored an alternative-rock sound inspired by bands including Hole and Sleater-Kinney, using the project as a creative outlet separate from her established pop and R&B work.

The album was eventually released under the band name Chick, with Carey’s friend Clarissa Dane handling the lead vocals. Carey contributed backing vocals under the pseudonym D. Sue. Her original recordings featuring her own lead vocals have remained unreleased, becoming one of the most frequently discussed pieces of music in her archives.

Carey first spoke extensively about the secret album in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. She explained that recording the music allowed her to experiment with a different image and express emotions that she felt were difficult to communicate through her mainstream releases at the time.

The singer also revealed in 2022 that the original recordings featuring her lead vocals had been located. Their discovery increased anticipation among fans who had long hoped to hear the version she originally created.

In October 2024, Carey discussed the album again during an appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. When Rogers asked whether she could finally release the project, Carey said she was frustrated that it had not happened yet and described the recordings as a good album. She also joked about finding a way to release it independently.

Carey had previously discussed plans to release the material with accompanying music videos. In an April 2025 interview with the Associated Press, she said she wanted to bring the project out but was unsure whether she could complete everything in time. She suggested that releasing a few songs could be another possibility.

During the October 30 Reddit session, Carey also addressed other questions from fans. She expressed interest in collaborating with Lenny Kravitz, writing, “I love Lenny too… Lenny if you’re seeing this, call me!” She also spoke about Glitter, naming “Lead the Way” as one of her favourite songs to write, record and produce for the album.

The anniversary celebration coincided with the release of a deluxe edition of Glitter, featuring additional material from the soundtrack. Carey also responded to a question about an unfinished song she had worked on after meeting Prince, explaining that she had never completed the track and did not know where the recording was.

Although Carey has not announced a release date for Someone’s Ugly Daughter, her latest response confirms that the project remains a subject she is willing to discuss with fans. The original vocal recordings have been located, but the singer has yet to confirm when the unreleased version will become available.
