Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Sept. 27, with surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist Pat Smear accepting the honor at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. The award recognized the band’s lasting contribution to music videos and popular culture more than three decades after its first appearance at the VMAs.
Public Enemy’s Chuck D introduced Nirvana before Novoselic, Grohl and Smear took the stage. The presentation did not include a musical performance, with the three musicians instead accepting the award and reflecting on the band’s history.
Novoselic spoke about the memories associated with making Nirvana’s music videos and credited late frontman Kurt Cobain with shaping their creative direction. He described Cobain as “one of one” and said the band’s music eventually developed a life of its own beyond what the members could have anticipated.
During his speech, Novoselic said Nirvana continues to resonate because people remain “hungry for authenticity,” describing the lasting appeal in terms of something real and uncompromising. He also said Cobain would have appreciated the legacy the band’s music and videos have created.
Grohl also addressed Cobain during the ceremony, saying that there is still something missing and that he thinks about his former bandmate every day. He thanked the audience and fans for continuing to pay attention to Nirvana’s music.
The Vanguard recognition comes after several of Nirvana’s videos received VMAs honors during the band’s original run. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” won Best New Artist in a Video and Best Alternative Video in 1992, “In Bloom” won Best Alternative Video in 1993, and “Heart-Shaped Box” received the same award in 1994.
Nirvana’s 2026 honor also marked the first time the Video Vanguard Award has gone to a band since Duran Duran received it in 2003. MTV announced Nirvana as this year’s recipient on Sept. 9, exactly 34 years after the group’s first VMAs appearance in 1992.
The 2026 VMAs were hosted by Snoop Dogg and featured performances and appearances from artists including Madonna, Taylor Swift, LISA, Shaboozey and others. Nirvana’s Video Vanguard presentation was among the ceremony’s major tributes to the history and continuing influence of music video culture.
