Dave Stewart is returning to his solo work with a new album that he describes as a deliberately homemade project, taking an unconventional approach to the way the record was created. The musician, songwriter and producer, best known as one half of Eurythmics alongside Annie Lennox, discussed the making of the album in a new interview with Billboard published Sept. 18, 2026.
Stewart has spent more than four decades moving between songwriting, production, solo projects and collaborations, but the new record was shaped by a decision to work in a more stripped-down and personal way. Rather than beginning with a large studio setup and building outward, he approached the project from the opposite direction, a process reflected in the album’s “Back to Front” description.
The musician said the recording process was “very homemade,” emphasizing the hands-on nature of the sessions. The approach follows a long history of Stewart experimenting with recording technology and creating music outside conventional studio structures. His work with Eurythmics also included periods of building and recording in smaller, unconventional spaces, helping establish a production style centered on experimentation and self-direction.
Stewart’s career stretches back to the 1970s, when he performed with the Tourists before forming Eurythmics with Lennox. The duo went on to produce major hits including “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” and “Here Comes the Rain Again,” while Stewart also developed an extensive career working with other artists and on film and theater projects.
His solo career has included albums such as Greetings From the Gutter and The Blackbird Diaries, as well as collaborations that have taken him into country, rock, pop and other genres. Stewart has continued recording and producing throughout the years, maintaining a connection to both traditional songwriting and evolving recording technology.
The new album continues that pattern while placing greater emphasis on the process of making the music itself. Stewart’s comments indicate that the project was built through a less formal and more direct recording method, with the homemade quality becoming part of the record’s identity rather than something to be polished away.
