Erykah Badu and The Alchemist have delivered one of the year’s most anticipated collaborations with Before the World Blows. The 16 track album brings together Badu’s unmistakable neo soul artistry and The Alchemist’s textured hip hop production.
The album brings together two artists known for experimentation and individuality. Its guest list reflects that spirit. The project features Westside Gunn, Earl Sweatshirt, Thundercat, Steve Lacy, DRAM, Kamasi Washington and Joi.
The collaboration traces back to Badu’s appreciation for The Alchemist’s work with Mobb Deep. After hearing “The Realest,” she expressed interest in recording over the beat. That interest eventually led her to connect with the producer and begin a creative relationship.
The pair spent approximately 18 months recording between Dallas and Los Angeles. Their first session produced “Next 2 U.” The track brought the Mobb Deep connection that initially sparked Badu’s interest full circle.
That uncertainty eventually became part of the rollout. Cryptic posters appeared across Sydney, Melbourne, London, Paris and New York. Clues gradually pointed fans toward the album’s final title. The campaign helped build anticipation around the release.
Badu also maintained a strong creative presence beyond the music. She directed the video for “Witch Doctor.” She also handled executive production, creative direction and styling for the visual.
For Badu, Before the World Blows represents a return to the full length album format after a 16 year gap. For The Alchemist, the project adds another distinctive collaboration to an already impressive career.
